Who is Good but God?

A young man approached Jesus one day, kneeling, and said, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.” (Mark 10:17-18)

If Jesus speaks truth, and no person is good, who can I write about on a blog called “Whatever is good”. Have I limited myself too much? I love to write about people. And people are in charge of the planet. Does the “not-good” of people taint everything on earth?

The name of this blog comes from Philippians 4:8.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. NASB

A respected voice in the Christian faith wrote these words. Are they in conflict with Jesus’ words? If God, as present in Jesus, has withdrawn into invisibility in heaven, is there any good to be seen in the world?

Yes, I think so. Actually, I think good is everywhere and is a credit to the good God who fabricated the stuff of creation and loosed intellect, will and emotion into the world.

So my aim here can be: find the good and call it out, with gratitude to the Creator. There is much to find. The only pitfall would be to forget who is in truth, the good behind the good. And navigating the boundaries between the Maker’s good and derivative good is one of the pleasures of the puzzle that is existence. Onward!
